Back To Work

Did some strength work yesterday:

HBBS: 375lbs 5x5
Press: 155lbs 1x5, 145lbs 4x5.  <-- this shit.  I've been here for like 2 thousand years.  I am starting to believe that for upper body pressing you just need tons more volume than just 5x5.

As for olympic lifting, we're going pretty light this week with some complexes.

  1. You ever do any upper body accessory pressing work? Push presses or behind the neck shit?

  2. I don't. You think I should?

On a slightly related note, the guy who won the 105kg class in 2012 olympics can jerk 240kg but can only strict press 90kg. Lolz.

  3. in greyskull, JP is not an advocate of increasing volume on lifts, given that there is an inverse relationship between the amount of volume that you do and the relative intensity that you put out. rather, he suggests increasing the volume of body weight movements. dare i say, add like a ton of pushups to your daily routine. start with 6 sets of 20 throughout the day when you're bored and go from there. at a minimum, you will get really swole from doing all those pushups.

  4. Dude you're really drinking the kool-aid ;)

But seriously, I've heard of this guy but what are his accomplishments and credentials? I don't really see nearly as many testimonials for greyskull as like, SS, TM, 5/3/1, etc.

  5. Justin talks about greyskull pretty frequently, and he recommended the programming, which is why I decided to read "Greyskull LP"...it made sense to me, and nothing was too radical about what he proposes. He offers a base strength program to beginners and then simply suggests adding body weight movements/lifts/low/high intensity conditioning depending on an individual's goals. Sounds reasonable enough to me to let my goals determine what my programming is, not the other way around. I'm not sure why I can only listen to someone if they're accomplished or credentialed (though I believe that JP is...several books, worked for Rippetoe for years as a nutrition expert, jacked and tan and gets chicks, etc.) Moreover, I don't think Greyskull invented the push-up...that's all I suggested. Do you really need to hear from Rippetoe or TM or 5/3/1 that push-ups can help develop your chest and arms?

At the end of the day, if SS makes me really strong but makes me feel like a moving pig, I'm not sure how that helps me (or anyone, for that matter). Greyskull is another option that says you don't have to gain a lot of fat to get really strong. For where I'm at and what my goals are, that was worth giving a shot.
