I used to believe that belts weaken your core, but I've recently been reading that it actually tends to help core development if used right. The point is that the belt helps you stabilize your core because it gives your abs something to contract against, thus increasing pressure in your trunk. This allows for a more powerful contraction of the core.
There s a lot of debate about belts. I tried one a while ago on some oly lifts, definitely take a while to get used to, definitely helps stabilize the core on the heavy lifts though so I say if it helps go for it.
