3x5 front squat @ 230
3x5 press @ 127.5 (fail: 4-4-4)

Press pisses me off...125 was solid at the end of last week.  127.5 yesterday was not even close to happening.  Also, if I ever fuck up my back lifting, it will be from presses.  No other lift I feel like I'm towing the line so close to losing spinal stabilization.  Any tips?  Looking at you here JC, your overhead capabilities are admirable.

  1. If you're losing midline stabilization during your press I'm guessing you're getting overextended (arching your back) while you press. Really important to pull your ribcage down towards your pelvis to keep your midline engaged the entire time.

Another question, how is your overhead mobility? Can you stand in a braced neutral position (belly on, ribcage pulled down towards your pelvis) and extend your arms straight over head (ideally behind your ear) without over extending your spine? I can't, unless I roll my scapulae (shoulder blades) out on a lax ball for a good 10 minutes on each side. It's a huge pain in the ass, but something I need to do every time I go overhead now to prevent injury.

  2. it would appear my overhead mobility is severely lacking. that makes a lot of sense that that would be the cause, because when i get toward lockout on the movement, that's when it feels like i'm losing it. I'll work on that, thanks a lot.

  4. Don't go into the pain cave. Your Totem Animal won't be in there to help you.
